On January 20, 2009, Barack Hussein Obama II will take office as he 44th President of the United States.
That day, the day after the Martin Luther King holiday, providence willing, Ron, my sister and I will be in the crowd for Inauguration Day. Hopefully we’ll be able to get close enough to see, through the tears.
It’s hard to choke back the tears now, because my mom and dad did not survive to see this day.
I’m emotionally drained. It still feels like a dream. Truth to tell, I’d long thought that the first African American, or American of African ancestry, to be elected president would be a Centrist Republican like Colin Powell or a woman like Condolezza Rice, had they not tied their fortunes to the Bush administration.
This is breathtaking.
I think I’m going to cry again.
It’s a great day for this country. Nothing but hope on this dark highway into the future. 🙂
Hope you make it to DC for Inauguration Day!!!!

This really is a stunning day. Everything has changed, and that, for once, is not hyperbole. That this black man is president elect has reaffirmed my belief in this country, has made me proud, for the first time in 8 years, to be an American. Tomorrow is our adoption finalization. This is the most amazing week of my life!

Exceedingly cool end to a horrible national nightmare, and I don’t just mean the 2008 campaign. I’m reminded of the Onion’s story on Bush’s inauguration: Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that “our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over.” Obama changes we can believe in: Cronyism=>Competence, Spin=>Accountability, Anti-intellecualism=>Intelligence, and so much more.
It’s just a shame that California got to taste one last bitter after-burp of Rovism, as professional initiative peddlers and a bizarre alliance of Mormon money and conservative black churches decided to piss downhill on a minority smaller and more marginalized than themselves to take away marriage equality and prove to the Cool Conservative Kids that they should be part of the gang too (even though the Cool Con Kids would still laugh at them both behind their backs and between elections). Here is hoping more outreach and some sharp lawyering can win the day and put this crap to bed permanently. And that Barack does such an impressive job cleaning up Bush’s failures that he’ll be emboldened to be more progressive than Bill Clinton ended up.
