Remember the three words in the title of this entry.
Because, IMHO, these words, these concepts have the potential to dominate public and private live in the United States for the next generation or two. Your children and your grandchildren will have to deal with these ideologies as they take deeper root in the American phyche.
But perhaps, just perhaps, the critical issue won’t be how Americans deal with these forces. Perhaps the crux of the matter will be how the rest of the world deals with an America dominated by this theological manifest destiny.
What the heck are they? Let’s start with Dominionism (admittedly a cursory introduction), and let’s start with a definition from S.R. (Stevan) Shearer…
“Dominionism” is a militant post-millennial eschatology (“doctrine of end times”) which pictures the seizure of earthly (temporal) power by the church as the only means through which the world can be rescued; only after the world has been thus “rescued” can Christ return to “rule and reign.” (Some dominionists see the seizure of the earth as the result of “signs, wonders, and miracles;” others picture it as the result of military and political conquest; most see it as a combination of both.)
Basically, Christianity must seize the state. All states. And America is #1 on the hit list. This is the context in which the battle over the posting of the Ten Comandments in a court house must be viewed. This is the context in which the Presidency must be viewed.
One wonders, with Dominionism so prevalent in the American right at this point in time, what right-wing Jews, Moslems, Hindus, etc., etc., tell themselves? Do they imagine themselves as safe, even immune, from the inevitable time when the Dominionists in political power decide it is time to purge America of all non-christian ideologies? More on this later.
The world is in for a tough time. America is in for a tough time. Will a Dominionist President seek the destabliization of a largely secular E.U. because, well, that’s what he thinks God wants? Is Russia next on the Dominionist hit parade, because it would be just dandy to add their nukes to God’s arsenal?
